A dialysis double lumen catheter is a temporary, dual-channel tube inserted into a large vein, like the internal jugular or subclavian, to provide vascular access for hemodialysis. It facilitates the efficient withdrawal of blood for filtering and its subsequent return, enabling extracorporeal blood circulation required for dialysis, hemoperfusion, or apheresis. The catheter's design allows for simultaneous blood flow and return, which improves treatment efficiency and helps minimize trauma to the vessel wall.
Temporary Access:
Double lumen catheters are primarily for short-term use, offering vascular access until a more permanent solution is established or until another form of dialysis therapy is initiated.
Dual-Channel System:
The key feature is its two lumens, or channels:
- Withdrawal Lumen: This channel draws blood from the patient's body to the dialysis machine.
- Return Lumen: After the blood is filtered, this lumen returns the purified blood to the patient.
