Hemodialysis fluid, also known as dialysate, is a carefully formulated solution used in hemodialysis to cleanse the blood of waste products and excess fluid when a patient's kidneys are not functioning properly. It's a critical component of the dialysis process, working alongside a semipermeable membrane to mimic the kidney's filtering function.
Dialysate is primarily an aqueous solution containing electrolytes like sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and bicarbonate, along with a weak acid and sometimes glucose.
It's designed to correct the metabolic imbalances caused by uremia, the buildup of waste products in the blood due to kidney failure.
During hemodialysis, the dialysate flows in the opposite direction of the blood, creating a concentration gradient that allows waste products and excess fluid to move from the blood into the dialysate.
