MALECOT CATHERTER

• A Malecot catheter is a specialized drainage tube with a unique "flower" or "mushroom" tip designed for secure placement within body cavities, particularly the renal pelvis, for draining fluids like urine, bile, or pus. It's often used in nephrostomy procedures to drain the kidney and after bladder or renal surgeries.
• The "flower" or "mushroom" tip expands within the body cavity, preventing the catheter from dislodging.
• It effectively drains thick, viscous fluids due to its design.
• The catheter is visible under X-ray, allowing for precise placement and monitoring.
• Besides nephrostomy, it can be used for bladder drainage in females, intercostal drainage in empyema (pus in the chest cavity), and as a perinephric drain after kidney removal surgery.
• Malecot catheters are often made of biocompatible polyurethane or silicone for patient comfort and safety.
