High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilators

• Gas exchange in severe lung disease: Even with very small tidal volumes, HFOV can achieve adequate gas exchange by relying on mechanisms like Taylor dispersion and pendelluft
• Neonates: Primarily used in newborns with severe respiratory distress syndrome, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, or meconium aspiration syndrome.
• Adults: May be considered for patients with ARDS, particularly in situations where conventional ventilation is causing significant lung injury.
